Every movie follows Bilbo Baggins and Thorin's company on the same quest to reclaim the dwarves' stolen homeland from the dragon Smaug, and students can track Bilbo's growth from someone his companions doubt into someone they depend on across all three viewings. The journey pushes the company through hostile territory and tests them with greed, old grudges, and a threat none of them fully understand until the final confrontation at the Lonely Mountain. Watching the first movie alone leaves the quest unresolved, since the company has not yet reached the mountain or faced Smaug at all.
